Southern Materials Recycling Facility recognised in national industry awards

In recognition of our achievements in the recycling, recovery and re-use of materials and the contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and minimising adverse environmental impacts, the Southern Region Waste ResourceAuthority (SRWRA), along with our joint venture partner, Re.Group, was very proud to receive the Society of Chemical Industry’s 2023 Plant of the Year Award for the Southern Materials Recycling Facility (SMRF) located at Seaford Heights.

The SMRF was designed to set new standards in the Australian and international recycling industry, and today achieves an industry-leading 98 per cent purity of all materials produced by the plant. This is despite the average level of contamination in the material presented to the plant for recycling being around 12 to 15 per cent.

The Plant of the Year Award is assessed on the facilities’ process innovations, occupational health & safety and environmental impact, contributions to national wellbeing and the economy, and its ability to meet the needs it set out to address.

The award is only given if an entry of ‘sufficient quality’ is submitted, resulting in the SMRF’s win being the first in several years and is testament to the shared vision of SRWRA and our joint venture partner, Re.Group, having both been driven by the belief that no resource should ever be wasted.
