Southern Region Waste Resource Authority announces major appointment

The Southern Region Waste Resource Authority (SRWRA), a leader in sustainable waste management solutions servicing communities in southern Adelaide, has named experienced local government executive Martin Borgas, as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Martin’s appointment comes at an exciting time for SRWRA, as it moves to add Food Organics/Green Organics (FOGO) waste processing to its contemporary services mix as part of an ongoing Joint Venture partnership with Integrated Waste Services (IWS).

Chairman Mark Booth says Martin’s 20-plus years’ executive experience across local government, corporate operations and public sector leadership will be invaluable in the delivery of its newly released Vision 2030 Shaping our Future: 2025-2030 strategic plan.

“SRWRA’s waste management precinct is evolving to handle all three kerbside bins, general waste, recycling and green waste. Martin’s expertise will strengthen our collaboration with Joint Venture partners as we work to enhance the integration of our services on behalf of our Constituent Councils, the Cities of Marion, Onkaparinga, and Holdfast Bay,” Mr Booth says.

“Martin has a track record for driving operational excellence and leading small teams with impact, and we’re looking forward to working with him to implement the vision and strategy that SRWRA has worked hard to establish.”

Martin will commence in the CEO role on November 10. He was most recently CEO of the District Council of Mount Remarkable, and was also Director of Operations at LGA Procurement, with both roles contributing to his understanding of working with local government to drive commercial outcomes and operational efficiency.

Mr Borgas acknowledges his role at SRWRA is an incredible opportunity to be a part of a highly regarded and well-established business that directly connects to and supports sustainable communities in southern Adelaide.

“Sustainable waste management and resource recovery are evolving at an incredible pace and SRWRA continually delivers for its Constituent Councils in this space, evidenced by services like its Materials Recovery Facility and Renewable Energy Hub,” he says.

“I’m excited to work with our Constituent Councils and Joint Venture partners, Re.Group and IWS, to leverage these opportunities and generate benefits to every member of our communities.”

In FY25, SRWRA’s integrated waste management site diverted approximately 58 per cent of the general municipal waste stream it received from landfill. Its Materials Recovery Facility, the largest and most technically advanced in South Australia, processed over 41,000 tonnes of comingled recyclables.

In the same year, SRWRA’s Southern Recycling Centre diverted over 36,500 tonnes of kerbside waste from landfill, and its Renewable Energy Hub produced enough green energy from landfill gas and solar array, constructed on a capped landfill cell, to power over 3,000 homes.
